Building a deck in Calgary isn't the same as building one in Vancouver or Toronto. Freeze-thaw cycles, frost depth requirements, and Alberta's permit landscape demand a process engineered for this climate — not borrowed from a national template.
At Deck King, we've built hundreds of decks across Calgary and Edmonton. Here's exactly how we do it.
1. Free On-Site Consultation
Every Deck King project starts in your backyard — not over the phone. We assess your existing structure, sun exposure, yard grade, and how you actually use your outdoor space. This isn't a sales visit. It's a technical evaluation that shapes every decision downstream.
2. Design & Material Selection
We present options in composite decking, pressure-treated lumber, and cedar — with honest comparisons on cost, maintenance, and longevity in Alberta's climate. Brands like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon all perform differently here. We tell you which ones hold up and which ones don't.
3. Permit Acquisition (We Handle It)
Calgary requires permits for most deck projects over 0.6m in height. Deck King pulls the permit, submits drawings, and manages all city correspondence. You don't chase paper. We do.
4. Frost-Depth Engineering
In Calgary, footings must reach a minimum of 4 feet below grade to sit below the frost line. Under-engineered footings are the single most common reason decks fail within 5 years. Every Deck King deck is built on footings that meet or exceed Alberta Building Code requirements.
5. Structural Framing
We frame with pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact where applicable. Joist hangers, post bases, and hardware are all galvanized or stainless — no shortcuts that rust out in two seasons. Beam sizing is calculated, not guessed.
6. Decking & Railing Installation
Boards are installed with consistent spacing for drainage and expansion. Railing systems — whether aluminum, glass, or cable — are installed to meet the 42-inch height requirement for elevated decks in Alberta. Deck King installs Trex, Fiberon, and TimberTech composite systems, along with custom cedar options.
7. Final Inspection & City Sign-Off
Once construction is complete, Deck King schedules and manages the final city inspection. We don't hand over a project until it has a signed-off permit. This protects your investment and ensures insurance compliance.
8. Post-Build Walkthrough
Before we leave, we walk the completed deck with you — covering maintenance recommendations, seasonal care for your specific decking material, and any warranty documentation. Calgary composite decks require different care than cedar. We make sure you know the difference.
Why Deck King
Deck King is Calgary and Edmonton's specialist deck builder — not a general contractor who adds decks as a side service. Our focus is outdoor structures: decks, pergolas, railings, and covered patios. That specialization means faster permits, better material knowledge, and accountability on every project.
Financing is available through FinanceIt. Most projects are completed within 2–4 weeks of permit approval.
